My Accelerator pedal is to light
« on: 24 March 2006, 19:26 »
My Acc pedal is so light it makes it difficult to drive, and sometimes its a little slow coming back up...  I almost have to lift it with my foot !

Anyone had this is there a broken/missing spring somewhere?

I looked through haynes, but could find nothing (its an '89 clipper BTW)

Thanks
Marc

The quickest way to find a fault may be to pop the bonnet and have a poke around – it's not too hard to trace the cable and you should be able to easily see if it's caught or worn etc..

It may also be worth getting down on your hands and knees and checking the cable behind the pedal itself as it might be catching on the entry point from the engine to the cabin.

While you're down there have a look at the condition of the rubber gromet that holds the cable into the top of the pedal. I've also got an '89 Cab and the rubber had perished so the cable kept popping out. New ones are only a couple of quid from VAG but they are f**king awkward to fit, I was nearly in tears.

Thanks phil, I've had a good look under bonnet and all looked fine,  to be honest I haven't been arsed to get down under the dash yet.. (I hate working down there!!)

I've had no probs with the cable popping out at all, it just seems like there is no resistance..  I can hardly feel the pedal under my foot...  I'll have a look underneath next time its dryish and look for anything obvious !

Thanks

On my golf there was a rubber gromet on the back of the pedal which had perished into pieces. That stopped the pedal springing back to its normal position. Its worth a look because the new gromet only cost about a £1.
old skool cool rules!

I'll have a look, I've got the seats out at the moment giving them a good clean, so should be easier to get to !

Thanks

I've just checked the gromment and it is as new.  the cable moves freely enough back and forward, but the pedal is far to light, almost as if there should be a spring attached somewhere !

I can hardly feel the pedal under my foot it is sooo light !!!!  the only spring I can see is on the throttle attachment at the carb, and that looks fine, is it possible to adjust this spring to make it tighter?

Have yo checked your throttle return spring on the carb/throttle body where the accelerator cable fastens to? If not a new cable would be the place to start.
Are you sure it's not a heavy right foot like I have problems with

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

    No its not the foot this time !!!

Yes the spring is there, its a weber carb, maybe I can unhook it and tighten the spring one more turn (if you know what I mean)  It looks like a real fiddly job though..

Does that sound possible to you guys?
