Electrical Problem
« on: 03 March 2006, 22:30 »
I seem to have developed a problem with my headlights (car is a 8v, standard lights).... The past week they seem to have a mind of their own whether or not they work. When turning the light switch, the dipped headlights work fine, but turn it full to main beams and now and then the lights won't come but remain dipped... ??

The other night they came on fine, then went off without warning. Then a few minutes later they came back on again. Again this evening they haven't come on, so I pulled out the fuses for the lights, but them back in (they are all fine) and lo and behold they are back on again.. But i'm sure it's a fuse problem as sometimes they just won't come back on.... This is the 3rd time now they have cut out on me.. I recently had a new Stereo fitted so I don't know if this could have done anything to the light circuits or not...

Any ideas as to how to trace this problem to the source? Obviously it's too late tonight, but I can tackle it in the morning tomos or will I have to resort to taking it to a garage for them to find the fault? Hope you can help...

Cheers

Mike

The problem is with the headlamps, not the main beams. So the stalk shouldn't be an issue should it?  :undecided: Hoping to get out and start looking soon once i'm warmed up a bit, tis freezing outside!!

it could be faulty contacts in the stalk, try closing the contacts up on the fuse too, it could be slightly loose, the earths are the best place to start.....

Which earth points would you suggest I start looking at? I know my way round the car a little bit, but not sure where all the earth points are yet. Fuses seem to be fine, but I'll take another look see again this morning in the light as it was pitch black last night when I took them out and put them back in again..... Thanks for the help so far :)
