Golf GTI 16v Starter Motor

Hi all,

How do you check if its the starter motor that has gone ?

I am 80% sure it has as I went out to start it the other day and it turn over a bit and then started clicking. Before that it was being very lazy when starting so...

Next question, are all the Golf starter motors the same, as in will a Mark 3 8/16v fit the mark 2 and will a mark 2 8v fit the mark 2 16v ??

Thanks in advance for any info you can give me, I want to be sure before I get a new starter motor.

dunno about the mk3 to mk2 but the 8v to 16v and vica versa etc will fit
