clutch, gearbox or linkage?
« on: 10 November 2003, 19:12 »
When selecting reverse on my 1994 Mk3 GTi 16v the gearbox crunches and bites as if the clutch pedal is not fully pressed down. All the other gears are fine, the clutch doesn't slip and the car's only done 40k.

Anyone else suffered this or any ideas what it could be?

Reverse gear doesn't have a synchromesh , so its common for it to crunch. Try selecting 1st gear then reverse, will be a lot quieter!

Tried that but it still crunches. Any other ideas?

Linkage out of adjustment? do all the other gears engage smoothly?

All the other gears are spot on.
Is it easy to adjust the linkage yourself?

I think there is a basic adjustment that can be done, but all the other gears are smooth then i suspect its a problem with reverse gear. Have you tried depressing the clutch twice before engaging reverse?

Yep, but it still does it. If you take the softly softly approach then now and again it goes in fine.

Went to VW. They put me in touch with a gearbox specialist who, as it happens, had already dealt with the car for the previous owner but through another garage.

It turns out that the garage the original owner took the car to believed there was a problem with the box and sent it to the gearbox specialist to repair. He said the box was in very good conditon, bearings good etc, and sent it back saying to overcome the problem the car needs a clutch and the flywheel skimming, which he would do. But the garage only fitted a new clutch, against his advice, and so the symptoms were only half fixed and the car was traded in by the previous owner and sold to me.

He said the flywheel has probably got a high spot and so creates drag with the friction disc. Because reverse doesn't have syncromesh, that's why you get a crunch.

Solution: Get the flywheel skimmed! But he did say putting the car in second gear before reverse will do the trick... and it does. Top man!

Hope this helps others.

Skim the flywheel, thats the first i've heard of that needing to be done. Thats an interesting one.
