Is it worth it?
« on: 11 January 2006, 18:12 »
Got a 16v in oak green so far 150,000 miles.  Is it worth getting a re build and maybe turboing it? I would like to keep the car for anthor 5 years or more but ive seen seat ibiza GTI's for £1500-2500 and there like 97-99 reg.  I dunno coz I woz getting a loan in DEC 06 for £3500 and dunno weather to spend on the golf or get something newer on the cheap :undecided:

rebuild yes. Turbo no.

Oaks are a rare car as they are, and are increasing in value. Turboing involves a lot of internal engine work, and will cost a good few grand to do. An engine rebuild can give it back the poke it had and gives peace of mind that nothing is going to go bang on them and cause a load of damage as easily as on a turbo. (although this is not a 100% guarentee as all engines can blow)

Would you know ruffly how much a re bulid is? but serious is it worth tho coz I would like to keep it for everyday use and I dont I want it falling apart 2years later coz its old and then spend thousands on it.

I will be able to get you a quote from a mate who used to do this stuff and see what he says. Will post it in here.

Is the body shell in good condition? Not worth doing the engine rebuild if the underside is rotten.

I'd only do the rebuild if something was to go..... that's just me though.
Consider the state of the suspension components, gearbox, clutch etc. as well.
