Sticky Clutch Pedal ?

Hi All

A few days ago I bought a 2001 Golf V5 with only 21k on the clock for my wife.  She has reported that on a few occasions (usually when cold) that the clutch pedal stays stuck down or (to use her words) "seems to go down a bit on its own" she then has to flick it back up by getting her foot under it.  I have'nt managed to replicate the problem myself and to me the clutch and gear change feel fine,  but then I havent really driven the car much from cold.

Anyone heard of this problem before with VW Golfs or have any ideas what could be causing it ?

I assume its a hydraulic clutch - could it be a leak in the system or something ?

Any help much appreciated.

Could be a problem with clutch slave or master cylinder, or air in the system. Or if it is a cable clutch, check the self-adjusting mechanism.

Hi, funny u ask this. I've had my Golf for over a month now and no problem up untill now. Today driving home from work the pedal (clutch) dropped to the floor and wouldn't come back. After stopping at the side of the road I noticed that some sort of plastic bracket had broken and caused this fault with the pedal (bracket houses a white fork like component, which sits on top of the master cyclinder causing it to move in and out). when I bought the car the guy had told me this had happened before but he thought that it was just a freak thing, now its happened again. anyone have any idea whats going on??

not 100% on this one, sounds like a hydraulic clutch problem, may be a cable but im sure its hydraulic will look up too make sure and get back to ya, either way the springs on the clutch plate should push the piston(if hydraulic) or the arm if cable, back after youve pressed the pedal

Thanks. I ordered a new braket and fitted it yesterday, going to work this morning it went again the pedal fell to the floor but the clutch wasn't engaged like u said. Was in 6th gear which wasn't good coming up to a set of traffic lights tryed to change with the revs and now I've knackered my syincro in forth AAARGH!! no warranty any idea how much this is gonna cost?  :'(

My clutch pedal got stuck down last night before we drove from Hull back to Birmingham. There was only a little bit of movement and I couldn't get into gear. Called the AA and all he did was have a quick look under the bonnet and then pull the pedal back up. He said that it's a hydraulic clutch and it is probably a problem with one of the cylinders (can't remember if he said slave or Master but I think he might have said slave). It should be fine just to pull the pedal back up but he did recommend getting it looked at. I only bought mine 2 weeks ago (01Y Black 1.8T Mk 4 5dr) and got 3month RAC warranty. Next time it happens (hopefully before the 3 months expire) I'm on the phone to them about it and hopefully just get it fixed.

i had this on my 2002 1.8t and luckily it was still under warrenty.put it in to the dealership and they changed the master cylinder and the problem never appeared again and that was 2yrs ago. jobs a good un.

hi guys common problem this, more than likely its the cluctch master cylinder, once it has dropped to the floor once, it will only get worse and could get to the stage where it will not come back up, its about 2hour+ job if all goes where, maybe worth a call to vw if yours cars are just out of warrany.

I work in a vw and audi dealership. Anymore questions i be happy to answer them.
