stupid clocks
« on: 18 December 2005, 21:42 »
Hi everyone,

I need some help with my dash clocks as they have stopped working.

My speedo is fine (well sort of but IÂ’ll get on to that in a min) but my MFA, rev counter, oil temp and fuel gauge arenÂ’t working, I still have the lights on the dash and the clock is still on the Mfa.

I've checked the obvious, fuse, ground lead to the rocker cover all are ok. I thought it could be down to the voltage regulator but IÂ’ve changed this with a known good one and it didn't change the fault.

The last thing IÂ’ve done is pull out the fuse board and the connector to the clocks and check continuity of every wire there all ok.

Anyone know anything else I can try?

Oh and about my speedo, I had my gearbox replaced but with a non gti one so my speedo is slightly off!, how many different types of speedo cables are there or is there any way to find out what speedo cable I need for my gearbox?
Someone did tell me I just needed to get the speedo drive not the whole cable?

Thanks
Simon

Check all three earth straps for damage/corrosion. The main strap from the battery to the gearbox can get corroded connections and once cleaned up can make a difference. The rocker cover strap is supposed to be the clocks earth strap but I had to replace both that one and the strap going from the bonnet to wing, and clean up the connections on the main strap before my clocks started working again.........

The MFA can be a sod once its lost power, try pulling the fuse and/or battery negative for 30 seconds :)
As for the speedo there are 2 types of speedo gear, red & white.  Red is for 120 & 160 mph clocks, and white is for 140 mph clocks :)

if the old clocks were 120 mph & the 16v clocks are 160mph, then the gear you have should be fine.
Most 120/160 clocks have a red gear and the 140 ones had a white gear
