hows the bolt attached to the bottom end? seperate part or part of the bottom end casting, ie if you heat up the surrounding metal could it be taken out :huh:

Oh I see!  The head bolts screw into a thread cast into the block!  Only way round it is to retap & use a larger thread really.  I don't think a helicoil would be strong enough!

Have been onto a local engineering company that do engine rebuilds and repairs, they recon they can pop a helicoil to repair the thread for £40 which doesnt sound bad.

I have to say that im a little unsure that it would be strong enough but they seem to think it will be fine.

helicoil will be fine. on some hipo race motors with alloy blocks helicoils are used from new as they are stronger

Just to keep this thread upto date, i got the thread repaired, and all i can say is he did an awesome job on it. Dont think it was a helicoil that was used, looks like some sort of full thread insert, the heads gone back on today and they all torqued up fine, result! :smiley:
