Loose Brake Pads - What's Missing????
« on: 18 December 2005, 09:52 »
Mentioned this in another post but desperate for advice so doing another post...........

Noticed yesterday that my brake pads on the front driver's side wheel are very loose - I can move them easily with my fingers, which I guess is not how it should be. Brake disc also has retaining screw missing and is therefore very loose when the wheel is off.

Obviously got to get a new screw for the disc, but what is missing from the caliper/pads area that is making them loose? Causing a lot of noise and doing my head in!

Bentley manual doesn't mention any springs as it is a late type Mk2, just says something about screws that should be replaced when changing the pads. I have a receipt from Feb 2005 for discs and pads, but there is no mention of fitting kits/screws on there.......

Please can somebody tell me what I need to get before the noise drives me insane!!

From memory I don't think that there is anything missing. The screws referred to are the bolts that go into the caliper to hold it onto the carrier. What can happen is that the slider pins on the caliper can wear causing the whole caliper to rattle. The pins are the things with the little rubber boots on that the aforementioned bolts go in to. Try loading the pins up with grease to take up play and stop them rattling.

missing retainer clips or the clips are just bent out of shape. can be bent back. Very annoying when they rattle!

maybe your pads are too thin

Thanks for the replies guys - had a look at the passenger side wheel today to compare and I think I know what is missing..............The other side has two retaining clips at the top and bottom which are completely missing from the drivers side!! That would be the explanation I think......

My guess is that the garage that fixed the wheel bearing lost the clips and the brake disc screw while they were working on the wheel bearing............Beginning to wonder if there are any garages in Northampton that can actually do a decent job!

Blue is right - there are clips on the front brakes. If that does not cure it then try some grease in the sliders.

Surely it would be better to remove the pins, clean them with a wire brush, re-grease and re-fit

Turned out to be the retaining clips on the pads - there are now two clips on the pads as there should be and annoying noise has gone! Thanks for the advice

I've only just read this thread so appologies if this is a bit late but In my manual they call those clips anti-rattle shims - self explanatory really
