Travel In Pedal
« on: 17 December 2005, 14:29 »

Hi 1st of all Hello every1 im new here but glad to find such an informaive GTI site its feckin awesome!!

I have been using the search function alot and thats answered most of my questions just one or two left i cant find answers for that piss me off about my mk2.

1stly. brake pedal travel. Its not the master cyclinder done the pushy pushy test thats fine. Bleed it this morning thats fine, pads n discs are also good. WTF is it!!!

could it be the rear shoes need adjsuting and tigheting???  just need a second opinion before i open them up  :undecided:

2ndly under the carb theres some water dripping onto my manifold loosing me precious water and causing lots of steam, is this some common problem with the water to carb thing some seal maybe? or maybe some pipe? if its something common will save me time, when i investigate it further.

apart from that its pretty good little run about, just done 30k in it over the last year and its never missed a beat. Im also running a weber carb setup.
BTW its a 1.6driver.

i cnt afford insurance on a GTI

tell me about it, i cant wait till i can afford gti insurance, ive got a 1600 with a weber too, your water problem confuses me, cause as far as i know ther shouldnt be water around there really cause there isnt any coolant pipes up there??? unless youvegot a auto choke on it somehow??? when the weber was put on were all the coolant pipes for the autochoke blocked off properly?

out of interest do you find your whole engine sounds different with a weber on? cause mine doesnt half make a crazy noise when its on the red line, different then it used to, its either that or ive broken something somewhere along the line?  :undecided:

as for your brakes i know nothing, brakes annoy the hell out of me, i scrapped my last gof and bought another one purely cause i couldnt get my breaks even, changed pads, shoes, all new fluid, blead properly and went thru all the haynes and to no avail,

someone will have the answers you want tho, theres some smart lads on here mate, good luck

i attempt everthing myself and if i f**k it up then i hand it over to my mechanic! But i do most of the work myself like to get my hands dirty

my mechanic confirmed that mk2's have pedal travel and that adjusting the rear brakes will sort this out. so i will be on the case tomorrow to sort this out.

as for the leaky water pipe i dnt no what the hell that is, but its going in for a MOT on monday so my mechanic said he would look into it.

After installing the weber carb i noticed squeaky noises when i accelerate, due to the fact theres an air leak somewhere causing it to squeak etc. But im gonna wait till after the MOT and see wa gwan.

Im also thinking of slapping a back box on soon, and maybe 8v cam with pulley. for more pull.

ive got a gti cam to put in too if i get round to it, just need a torque rench and im away, tell ya what mate, when you mess things up its not your fault, i truly believe that golfs in genaral are twits, they like to go wrong, dont ask me why, maybe its simply to piss uss off?

I opened the rear hubs and cleaned and tightened stuff. The shoes are New!

Bloody bugger still got travel in brake pedal! its extemelt pissing me off! but various sources tell me its common for a VW golf to have some travel in the brake pedal.

My dad used to have a 8v Gti and that never had no travel! What the hell could it be?

also going in for MOT 2mrw. Should sail right through.

I would check all your rubber brake hozes. Get some one to push the pedal while you look. You might find that one has a bulde/bubble in it. If all that fails you could change your master cylinder for a larger one like you do when doing a 280mm conversion. This will also reduce brake pedal travel.

The coolant leak will be the rubber o'ring in the inlet manifold has perished, check the end of my pierburg FAQ for info on how to swap it :)

change the brake fluid. and look at renewing the flexi pipes with braided items. that'll help get rid of the long pedal

also, how much pads are left on the fronts?
