Windscreen washer pump borked
« on: 12 December 2005, 20:23 »
My windscreen washer pump has given up on me. This has forced me to look into a few things I had postponed.

My washer tank does not appear to be standard, instead of one pump with dual output there are two pumps, but only one of them is actually attached to the washer switch, pressing or pulling washer the frontscreen (when the pump worked).

The washer tank is larger (9.3 litres), and the second pump has a large bore outlet, it's attached to garden hose! and I haven't worked out where it goes yet (will look this weekend)

The pipe to the rear washer has no rubber end to help connect it to a replacement pump that I need to get.

The replacement pump won't be able to go where the old one was because it's to close to the battery no giving enough clearance (as the tanks larger)

I'm hoping to be able to put a new pump in place of the second unused one, while the gap here is large then the pump, the second pump appears to be the same size but has a collar around it, so I'm hoping to be able to use that.

I hope this makes some sort of sense, it's very weird.

Now to the questions.
1) What's the part number for the dual outlet pump that I need. (Does anyone have a spare one going?
2) Can I get the small section of rubber hose that goes from the end of the the pipe to the pump, what part number.
3) Would it be worth me getting a proper washer tank (again part number, does anyone have a spare?)

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it may be for headlamp washers?  If not there are plenty MK2s about in scrappys and/or being broken on here so someone will be able to help you out with a normal sized bottle & pump :)

it sounds exactly like the front headlamp washer setup

if i were you id be inclined to get the existing setup working. front headlamp washers on mk2's are a very rare option

Yeah except that:

There are no headlight jet washers,
There are no water line to the front system (just a bit of old garden hose)
There is no headlight jet washer switch,
There is no room behind battery to correctly fit front and rear windscreen pipes without altering the existing system.

Would my theory that  the 'spare pump' (read headlight washers) being the same size (diameter) as the windscreen pump be correct?

I'm going to cobble together something that gets water on to the screen (i.e. attach smaller diameter front screen pipe to larger diameter outlet of the spare, plenty of gaffer tape) just so I can be legal again.

Well I'm not sure but I thiought the headlight washers use the same pump as the front screen (and the lights are sprayed when you spray the windscreen)  The headlight washer tank is massive though.  does the tank have a VW part # on it?

Either way if the rest of the system is missing just replace it with a standard MK2 washer bottle/pump

Any chance you could post a few pics of this mutated pump and bottle?
