Hi all,

Maybe someone out there can help me. I've ordered  a GTi/dsg for delivery in  feb-2006 { company car replacement :-)))) } which is coming fitted with the standard alarm kit ( with  extra's) and I've heard that the GTi is  popular with the wrong types of individuals (thieves)  here in Ireland at the moment  and I was just wondering how good is the factory alarm or should i get a better/different type.

Any other "legal " security/anti theft  advice would be much appreciated

alarm and security is good enough mate id just watch your keys keep them away from front doors or windows where they can be seen.  Nearly all new cars are now stolen with the owners keys because its so much simpler than disabling dead locks, alarms and immobilisers.

Hi Bren, I'm in Ireland myself.

My advice would be if you have a garage, use it. Personnally I find the immobiliser to be ok as we all know that it is really the keys they will need first to take the car.

Out of sight out of mind I would say.

thanks for your inputs. I'll take the normal precautions of keeping the keys well out of sight and as I
don't have a garage maybe I'll use the other 2 cars to "block in" in the driveway ;-).

As it's a company car why not sell them the idea of having it fitted with a tracker, see here --> http://www.tracker.co.uk/home.php Then if the keys are whipped there is a good chance that they will get the vehicle back, I guess this is only applicable if the police force have the tracking equipment in ireland as I know that all the UK forces do.

Most standard fit security now is Thatcham approved, so other than convenience features (remote start, headlight activation, total closure etc) you won't get much value for your money by adding additional alarms.

Also, some manufacturers get (understandably) shirty when you start fiddling with (thesedays, very complex) wiring, and you can cause yourself warranty issues.

I would recommend two additional devices;

Firstly, a Tracker, as Gibby recommended. This will allow the car to be located if anyone does take the car by hi-jacking/key theft

Secondly, get your windows fitted wth a security film (comes in clear if you donlt fancy the tinted window look). This will stop the opportunist from getting in via smashing a window, and will ensure your iPod remains in your glovebox etc (not that I keep mine there, you understand  )
