rear shock coming though...
« on: 28 November 2005, 01:14 »
got my 3rd gti today mega cheap as one of the rear shocks is in need of attention. The top part that has the nut on you see under the rubber in the boot is now poking into the car. I was told this was just the top peice that needed replacing.

am I right in thinking I basically drop the shock out and replace the rubber part and reassemble the shock? Shouldn't be much more than £15 from GSF I hope.

I think now it's just ridding on the spring and the shock is wiggling around causing the wiggley ride when driven hard.

has the top spring cup knackered on it then? i know when i replaced the suspension on mine the top cups for the springs were all nearly rusted right thru

might be worth getting a new spring cup and topmount just to be safe

Assuming no dammage to the shock due to it flapping around, I reckon all you need is a new top mount.
Just need to drop shock out to replace it.

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

I can almost guarentee that the little circlip that goes round the shock piston has come off, it is meant to stop the spring going any lower than that point but usually is the first bit to break. This results in the piston popping through the top.

I agree with Slick and Blue. After a few blind alleys cause my suspension had been messed about with by a previous owner, the shocker in the boot condition was caused by the little circlip. It is only pennies from VAG
