grinding noise when shifting into 6th
« on: 15 April 2026, 22:11 »
hello, recently i purchased a golf gt 2.0l diesel from 2010, absolutely stunning first car i have ever bought, but driving it on motorways i have noticed something odd when shifting 5th to 6th, (also applies from any gear into 6th) changing gear half way you can hear a grinding noise. i cannot tell whether its the gearbox grinding, or the gear selector doing something funny.
just asking if anyone has the same problem or if there is a solution to this.

regards
Markus

Hi Markus,

Grinding into 6th isn’t normal most likely the 6th gear synchro starting to wear, especially if all other gears are fine. Could also be clutch not fully disengaging or slightly misadjusted linkage.

Try shifting a bit slower or double clutching if that helps, it points to synchros.

Worth checking gearbox oil too, especially if you’ve just bought it.

Ahh okay, that’s worth mentioning.

The new clutch could be related if it’s not fully disengaging properly it can cause grinding when selecting gears, especially higher ones like 6th.

I’d definitely get the clutch checked/adjusted before moving onto the gearbox. Could be something simple like the bite point or hydraulics needing a look.

Still could be synchro wear, but since the clutch was just done, I’d start there 👍

Was this sound present before you had the clutch and flywheel replaced?
