Just bought a Mk8.5
« on: 28 October 2025, 10:52 »
Hi, Thanks for letting me join.

I've purchased an ex demo Mk8.5 in Oryx white with DCC, HK and spare wheel.  Rubber floor and boot mats were a bonus.

It is supposed to be my wife's car, although I'll be driving it more, and I convinced her anything less than the GTi would be underpowered for longer trip family duties.  Very pleased with it.

I've never owned a DSG 'box before and any tips to look after it are welcome please.  I've turned off Auto Hold as it makes slow manoeuvre parking etc easier.  My understanding is to not let the car creep too much as that wears the clutch and to flick it into neutral when waiting at traffic lights for more than c.10 seconds?

Tyres were set at 2.4 bar but the sticker says 2.7.  Any experience of best pressure for the 19s to ensure even tread wear?

Thanks again.

Pete

Hi Pete, fellow Oryx owner here! Nice spec! I'm not saying you are wrong with your DSG tips but can't say I've heard them before. My autohold is always on and never had any issues, likewise with the creep. You might want to re-post in the MK8 section for better viewing and replies though.

Enjoy driving it

Welcome SFTWend  and what a fine looking GTI that is

Best advice I’d give having run DSG mk8’s and now an 8.5 for damn near 5 years (Tempus fugit) is leave everything in factory settings. Leave auto hold on as it’s seamless and both you and the vehicle will learn each other. And leave the gear nugget alone when sat at traffic lights. It’s all electronic and if the auto hold engages it’ll stop pulling and power down in stop start mode quite promptly.

As for tyre pressures, I’d say drop them a bit from factory recommended to improve both comfort and tyre wear but it’ll take a bit of experimentation both front and rear.
