What shade of grey are these alloys
« on: 20 June 2025, 16:19 »
Hi

I am thinking about painting my diamond cut alloys. Saw these on a similar coloured car to mine and thiught i'd ask here if anyone knows whether they are matt grey or gun metal grey.

Thanks!

Are you planning on painting them yourself or getting them powder coated by a decent wheel refurbishing company? Getting them powder coated by a good, reputable wheel refurbishing company would be my choice as the finish will be much more durable than a DIY painted finish, and much less susceptible to damage from stone chips and tyre fitter damage.

As for the colour / finish of those Oettinger RXX alloys in the pictures you’ve posted - a good wheel refurb company should be able to refurbish them in a colour and finish that’s pretty close to - or identical to - that of the alloys in your picture. Note that there’ll be many different shades of grey, and also different shades of gunmetal. Gunmetal will also be available in a matte, satin or gloss powder coat finish. It’s difficult to tell from the pictures whether those alloys have a matte, satin or gloss finish, but from the second picture in the area of the centre cap and wheel bolts, the surface does look to be semi reflective which suggests they’re not matte.

If your colour preference is a shade of grey, you could also consider anthracite or shadow chrome. I’d certainly recommend speaking to a good wheel refurb company who’ll be able to show you the range of colours they offer. They may also have some sample alloys available in the some of the more popular colour options they offer which could help you make your colour choice decision.

If you get them refurbished, be sure to post up some pictures once they’ve been done and fitted back on your car.

Hi SRGTD

Thanks for such a helpful response! I am looking to get them done professionally as  it's definitely a job way beyond my skill level. I have the same RXX alloys but
they are quite badly kerbed and not looking the best now. Plus I understand diamond alloys and our salty roads don't go well together! The wheels were reflective which did not come through in the pics.

I'll ring round a few refurbishing places and will post pics up once done. Thanks again.

Having owned a couple of sets of factory fit wheels in matt finish I’d recommend going for a satin or slightly glossier finish as the matt paint seems to encourage brake dust to stick and it’s impossible to remove light scratches from them without leaving a shiny patch.

A good wheel refurbishment company will have a chart of paint shades and will be able to match most colours perfectly.

I do like the simplicity of design of those Oettinger wheels
