Hi, I think I have similar issue since November, didn’t manage to actually look into it, it is really annoying as it is gets louder on a cold days. But feels like sounds comes from the area right under the small window .I have one on the drivers door, i have located it right in the corner where the small glass section is towards the back of the dashboard.. there's a bit of trim that is not fixed on and when you press on it, it stops the rattle, it flexes and vibrates.. i think i need to put something discrete in there to stop it moving.
In your case it is probably the panel at the end of the dash where the airbag key switch is, I had a small rattle from both the left and right panel on my mk8 and 8.5, I used some loom tape around the edges on the dash whilst the panel is removed, then when it clips back in place it sits nicely against that instead of the plastic. DO NOT UNPLUG THE AIR BAG SWITCH!!. If you do it will put up an air bag light when you reconnect.
