It happened again.... Android auto
« on: 14 February 2025, 07:51 »
So the car disconnected from android auto again and I was unable to reconnect. Took some pics this time (pulled over of course) and for the life of me I cannot get it to reconnect again once it's disconnected. Contacted dealer as you can see from pics it says unable to connect to your device yet it is connected as a phone still and able to make calls.
The car hotspot just won't turn on as requested

Am confuddled to say the least

When driving the android auto disconnects and stops working, my phone states "to use android auto select it on you car screen" when I do that a message appears on the screen (see pic attached) about car WiFi and it won't connect to the android auto again. Any ideas? I tried following the on screen prompt and connecting the cars "WiFi" but that won't connect either.

You don't need to enable the hot-spot in the menu for AA. It does it itself with a direct 5ghz WiFi connection after the phone talks to the car over Bluetooth.

I suspect if it's dropping mid use then it's the car end with software problems, assuming your phone is fully updated and current model.

If I'm right then you have to wait for new vw software...

I assuming that you are connecting wirelessly? Your phone is already paired via Bluetooth so it should just work. The fact that it is (apparently) dropping the connection could be due a number of reasons. AA requires Bluetooth and wifi, so the problem is probably the latter, as suggested by the error messages.

Although I don't use AA very often in my 8.5 (the native satnav is pretty good), it have tested it a few times and have been surprised how well it works (Google maps, Waze, etc). This is wireless of course. It might be worth trying connecting your phone via a quality USB lead (I got a VW-approved one supplied with the car) and see if that kicks AA into life. However, I suspect that you might end up booking it in for a dealer check.

These connection problems can be very frustrating!  I had an M135i back in 2020 which had wireless AA listed as a feature but it never actually worked! BMW blamed my phone, which was an up to date Samsung. I was obliged to connect via a USB lead if I ever wanted to use AA, which is a pain when you are 'on the move'. I now have a Google Pixel 8, which works very well for both calls and AA. I see that you also have a Pixel, so I doubt that that is anything to do with the problem.

Hope you get it sorted.

Had a similar problem in my old Merc, finally tracked it down to the phone overheating when charging and using wireless AA, causing it to stop responding for a short while. Might be worth seeing if your device gets hot before this happens.

I did think that as the phone gets rather warm in the wireless charger and it is a fairly old (4years old) so maybe it is the phone.
Dealer said they'd get it in and run a diagnostic so see how that goes.

It will over heat on the wireless charger after a few hours of use. Even though the MK8.5 has a cooling fan on the charger pad I doubt it fixes it.

Use a cable if you are doing long trips is my suggestion.

My mk8 does warm when it's overheating though...
