Hi guys,
I'm at my wits end with this car at the moment, it seems to be one problem after another but something that I have had since I bought the car is this 'rattle' like noise that is very specifically noticeable between 2/3k revs in lower gears so lets say 1st and 2nd gear.
The only way I can describe it is that it sounds a bit like a diesel engine at those rev ranges, if you put your foot down you don't hear it so it's only noticeable when you're tootling along quite slow. The noise is also only there when the engine is hot and you can't hear it at all on a cold start.
When idling you can't hear it, the car runs smooth as anything? It's just come back from having a new clutch and DMF as a previous mechanic said that could be causing it but low and behold it's come back from that work being done and the noise is literally the same. (in fairness both needed doing anyway so i accidentally unearthed those).
I am aware of the old turbo actuator rattle, which I think I also have.. but this noise is totally separate and sounds to be coming more from the right/central side of the engine as opposed to the left where the turbo is. Having posted this across some Facebook groups people have suggested it could be the Cam Magnet solenoids as opposed to the magnet itself, now I'm more than happy buying new magnets, new solenoids and getting that work done but I'm hesitant to throw another chunk of money at that without knowing what it is. Appreciate these engines are slightly 'tappy' with direct injection but this sounds different to that imo.
Does anyone else have any suggestions on what might be causing it? It's on 127k miles, timing chain done on 103k (according to service book), no boost issues, no fault codes, no errors on anything. OBD11 scan unearths nothing that would point me in any correct direction either.
