Full size spare
« on: 16 April 2023, 18:39 »
Does anyone run a full size spare? Do they fit in the space? Just I’ve the chance to get a wheel, that’s a good price, get it mint and then I’ve a full size spare, but, if they don’t fit…..??

What size is the full size spare? If it’s larger than 18” diameter, I don’t think it will fit. In my experience I don’t believe it will, nor do I think a tyre width of 225 or more will sit below the floor in a Golf. That’s why spares in a Mk 7 or 8 are usually 125 x 70 x 18. Perhaps others have a different experience.

Probably best to try one of your wheels first....

Honestly can't see the point of a full size spare, you lose space and pointless spending extra money on something you may never use. I have only every used a space saver once in 35+ years of driving.

I bought a 20” spare for a Discovery that I had after 2 punctures in quick succession and got peed off using the space saver. Cost me £120 plus another £100 for the protector to stop it getting nicked (they hang underneath). Never used it once😂

See in my last a6 avant I had a full size spare in that, satin black like the other 4 alloys, and I used it loads of times….. on that occasion when you have just the one wheel need a refurb, used the full size spare for those few days….. and you aren’t restricted to 50mph like on a space saver…. Makes all the difference when your commute is an 80 mile round trip, motorways and dual carriageways as well as country roads….

I’ll measure the wheel well once it’s back from the body shop next week…. See if it’s possible or not

Not a perfect solution to your situation but you could consider;
  • carrying a space saver in the car so you’re prepared for the occasional emergency / puncture and you’re able to continue the journey to your destination.
  • keeping a full size spare at home (assuming you’ve got the storage space in a shed or garage) to use on the car for a few days when you get those single alloys refurbished.

The helix sub woofer can fit on top of a space saver and just about fits under the upper level of the boot storage. I think from memory it's about the same dimensions as the existing space saver, so say 125 x 2 = 250 width total. So a 225 wide wheel will fit, but you will lose the lower level of storage.

Had to drive on a motorway with a space saver for a fair few miles in bad weather. That was interesting......not least, aggressive HGV drivers not happy with me doing 50mph in lane 1. They should come with an 'I'm limited to 50 mph' sign (or similar) that you can stick in your rear window.
