Hello all. Thank for accepting me into the forum.

I’ve had my mk7.5 GTI DSG since March. Shortly after I bought it I noticed a strange rattling/knocking noise coming from the front end when moving off front a standstill. Stupidly, I did nothing about it and it has recently got much worse and I am starting to get concerned.

The noise only occurs at around 5 mph when setting off and with a few degrees of steering input in either direction. It seems to be just when the clutch is biting, worse when starting uphill with more load on the clutch. It definitely not suspension related. Has anyone experienced this and if so is there a solution?

2019 car with 22000 miles.

These types of noises are always difficult to diagnose.

Is the car still under warranty? If so take it in as you’re obviously easily able to replicate it.

To me it sounds more like a “click click” sound. I would be thinking cv joint (though that is normally more  noticeable nearer full lock). It definitely sounds rotational so I would be looking at getting your wheel bearings checked first despite the relatively low mileage.

Good luck

I would say that's a suspension noise, it's more of a dull sound, not a CV as it doesn't sound metallic,

If I we're to have a wild guess I would say top mount not letting the spring rotate as you turn.

Get a mate to hold the spring, obviously whilst parked, whilst turning the steering lock to lock, it should feel smooth not all juddery and harsh.

Thank you both for your replies.

I’ll get the wheels off and have a good look about around what you’ve suggested and see if there’s anything obvious. Failing that, I’ll get it booked in locally as it’s out of warranty unfortunately.

Cheers.

Hello again.

I have finally had this issue resolved so thought I would provide an update in case proves useful to others.

I tried as suggested above with no joy.

I decided to pursue the issue with the VW dealer I bought the car from since they sold it to me with the issue present. After A LOT of discussion, arguments and general hassle (including them persistently denying there was anything wrong with the car 🤷🏻‍♂️) they finally narrowed it down to a problem with the electronic LSD. They found the diff oil was filthy so they changed it and performed a reset of the diff controller unit. Thankfully I have had no abnormal noises since. Let’s hope it stays that way!

Moral of the story… don’t buy a car from Arnold Clark 🙄.

Whilst its well known that the GTI's LSD needs an oil change about every 3 years its often its never done during the regular service schedule as its a seperate chargeable item - god knows why!

First time I've heard of anyone actually detecting a problem with it though - people on here tend to obcess about getting it done but I've never heard of not having it done causing a problem.

VAG oil change at 3 years is a part of the service schedule like brake fluid so if a car is advertised as full service history those items should bave been done. Glad you got it sorted. My dealership did the VAG oil change at the 3 year service, extra cost of course, without prompting so some are on top of requirements or just aware of extra income streams! Oil vor 2019 gti should also meet 507/509 specs as well in the EU area. Not all garages realise this either.

I had my LSD done at a local Independent on its 3rd Birthday thanks to the info from this excellent site. When I questioned the main dealer about it, they stated it wasn’t a service item but could quote for me - hence a visit to the Indy. In fairness, the dealer had always been pretty good.
Local Indy every time from now on.
