Door seals
« on: 29 August 2022, 20:13 »
Has anyone noticed marks on the inner sills at the back doors, near the joins of the weatherstrip/ door seals? I am told the joins can rub on the paint and cause small marks / abrasions on the paintwork, visible if you look closely. The gaps around the rear doors seem even.
On a slightly different topic has anyone  found a tight fit between the bottom of the tailgate and the top of the rear bumper?  Again, on close inspection the paintwork may be marked. I’d be keen to hear from anyone who has noticed either of these. Thanks.

I had one rear door and the tailgate not aligned properly and rubbing the paint on my mk7... Get them to adjust them.

I am talking to the body shop currently, pending an inspection by an engineer at the request of the dealer. I was wondering if others had the same issue. The door marks are only apparent on a very close look.

I’ve not noticed the rear door seal issue, I’ll have a proper look over the next few days. The car has been a bit neglected of late due to a hosepipe ban.

The tailgate rubs on the rear bumper top on mine though, that’s an issue carried over from the mk7. I have a nice line where the paint is rubbing away. It should bother me as things like that normally do but it doesn’t for some reason. I think because my mk7’s all did the same I just accept it.
An easy fix to sort it though, theoretically at least.

The marks on the area around the wheel arch are very slight but on close inspection they are visible as abrasions on the paintwork. The body shop confirmed it is the join of the weather strip rubbing. They indicated the paintwork can be corrected and recommend applying PPF to stop it recurring. I think these marks are likely to be present on many cars as a consequence of the build process but unless the area is inspected closely it will not be noticed. Over time I think it could go down to bare metal.
The body shop confirmed the bumper is too close to the tailgate and the manager's opinion is it was fitted incorrectly at the factory. There is a line on the paint across the bumper where the tail gate is catching. Initially I listened to the tailgate closing and it didn't sound right. These two issues were first noticed by a detailer, who was thoroughly checking the car prior to applying a ceramic coating which has been postponed until the paintwork is rectified.

Ceefeesh, do you have a photo of the door seal marks?
I do have slight marks on the paintwork in the door shuts where the external window rubber ends on the trailing edge of the rear door. I’ll have to get a photo, been a bit busy of late and can’t clean the car anyway so haven’t had chance to inspect it much.

Here it is but it’s hard to capture. I have copied them in from another programme but I think they are still discernible. You can expand the image.  If not I’ll get better photos tomorrow.

They are not the worst but I think many cars will have them on close inspection.

What can we see through the square window? (Showing my age now)

Yeah that’s not good Ceefeesh, mine are much lighter marks than that. If I get time I’ll take a photo later.

Excuse rubbish photos, it was direct sunlight so I had to try and shade the area a bit for anything to show up.
The area on both sides is roughly in line with the top of the rear seets/seatbelts/parcel shelf support.

They look to be in the same area as the marks on mine. Not too bad but not what you want. My car was inspected by an engineer on behalf of VW today. When I know the outcome I’ll post. I still think this will be a common problem as yet undetected.
