MK7 infotainment fault
« on: 28 February 2022, 17:50 »
Hi guys looking for an electrical ninja on infotainment system fault
status below
Car is a 2013 VW Golf MK7

No sound from infotainment system
Tried restarts a thousand times,[holding button down for ages
I've  connected neg & pos battery leads [disconnected battery] to drain capacitors - no luck
took the main unit amp out in glove box to look at connections all seems ok
If i leave it overnight get in, i get sound so long as i keep driving - if i drive to supermarket for a bit of shopping, i get back in 10 mins later,  no sound..... until day after when left in cold weather.
then sometimes just out of the blue after say 4 days of driving around with no sound, it will just come on randomly.

All auto sparkies want silly money just to switch on ignition.... then usual response is just replace everything.
the main display is fine - Sat nav , media, bluetooth, i can see phone calls coming in but no blooming sound on anything
the park pilot sound works but i think this may be on a different system.
Pulled out a few fuses... all in tact.

its model MIB MAIN-UNIT 5GO 035 020B - HARMAN
Got NAV Pro head unit

me hopes its just a connector somewhere. but feel it will cost almost 4 figures to find out unless some infotainment ninja on this forum can suggest something to get me driving around with my favourite play list banging out again.

No sound = dark cloud
P.S I'm not an electrical wizard just looking for some suggestions - thanks for any replies

Common problem with the mib1 if I remember, Have you done anything with the unit (updated firmware), is the unit og to the car?
Is it a fender? (These are know to go pop)

One workaround for it (if it’s not hardware)
Go to "Service Menu" (keep MENU button till Service Menu appears)
Choose "Upgrade" -> SD card
Choose "Back Arrow" and press "Radio" button

Firstly thanks for the reply VWjap

No not touched the firmware
No its not a fender

will i need the software update on an SD card before going through the sequence you recommend.
as both SD cards slots are empty on the Main unit/Amp
Sorry for what may appear a silly question i'm not an electrical guy but will give anything a go.
thanks for your input.

Hi there,

First ever post on this forum !

I had a 2013 mk7 GTD with Dynaudio and on occasion I also had no sound. I was getting an error message on the display when switching onto SD card and all the radio station icons disappeared and it was only showing the actual frequencies on the screen. After my 3rd visit to my local VW garage with this issue, they moved the boot floor to the highest position and informed me that if the same issue occurred again then I would need to seriously think about a new amplifier; costing over £1000  I left the garage with everything working again, but to this day, I still don't know exactly what the problem was as no-one at the garage could / would tell me. For whatever reason.

Not long after that and having already spent over £4k on repairs, I decided enough was enough and I got rid; traded her in for an Audi S1 (which I then traded in for a GTI PP).

Sorry it doesn't help you, but just my experience.

Thanks for that Mark G
I tried VWjaps idea that didn't work either.(sorry buddy).

I got in it the other morning (about 0~1 degrees outside)...radio, nav, media etc...everything works ok sound at its pure best.
got out at work, 4 hrs later got back in at lunch time ...no sound.
Drove home approx 5 hrs later after lunch - turned a corner & music came on again - i could have drove to lands end and back and it wouldn't have missed a beat - as soon as i get out & give it a minute & get back in  - no sound!!
If it is the amp then surely these are a common VW fault which should be fixed by VW if loads of people have suffered the same experience.

I was hoping a electrical guru on here might know a fix that doesn't include just replacing everything.
I even thought it could be a speaker wire or something through the doors but not sure if 1 speaker fails, they all fail & cut off the sound.

Trade in is sounding good at the moment - but no sound won't get me top dollar for it...rock and a hard place with this.
Thanks for your reply.

I don't have nav, but mine had a replacement loom connector fitted under warranty after I was encountering issues with unresponsive frozen screens. I had audio but couldn't control it in any way. It was erratic, and I had to show the video a dealer. Their rapid diagnosis in the absence of them seeing it for themselves made me think a bulletin was out on the topic.
