Had the same problem with my CSS. Once installed it would not connect. Turned out to be a faulty USB socket in the dash cubby hole. Was replaced and worked fine after.
its a different socket for CarPlay

Different in what way? Please explain so me and others can understand. Thanks.
The front facing socket is the same but the wiring and wiring harness is different on the back of the socket. There's extra wires and a different wiring setup to accommodate CarPlay

Code for the correct socket/harness is 5G0035222E

Thanks so much for that. Handy part number to have for people when running into future problems.

Hi All,

So I've been trying to get Apple Carplay to work in a 2016 GTI Clubsport S, App connect was installed but needed activated so took it to my local dealer yesterday for activation, 3 hours later they still couldn't get it to work with apple carplay, It's working fine with Android Auto but when you plug an iPhone in you just get the error message "Unable to connect. Please check if the mobile device supports apple carplay.". The dealer has just come to the conclusion that it's not supported but these cars are being advertised as having it so I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem or can anyone confirm if it works in a Clubsport S??

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers!

Late to the thread but been running Car Play in mine for a few years without problem. The dealer knew to switch the USB socket and wiring but being the first car they'd ever done, it took them twice as long as quoted and they spent a lot of time dealing with VW dealer technical support who resolved the issues they were having getting it to work. Only 150 cars and I imagine not all of them have it enabled meaning many dealerships won't have even encountered the issue.

Definitely, the thing that gets me is that my dealer just decides it can't be done, even brought out paperwork with a list of unsupported units and told me mine was one of them, never argued with them thought I'd just go home and do my research where I seen 2 or 3 CSS's being advertised as having carplay. Contacted a few more dealers, nobody has a clue, posted on this forum and get my answer practically straight away  new usb is being installed in a weeks time so all should be grand then
