Golf Mk7 ambient sill lights not working
« on: 21 August 2019, 09:01 »
Hi all

My mother purchased a 2016 Mk7 Golf GTD (sorry, it's not a GTI but the query I have I believe is cross car line) a couple of weeks ago, and I went to have a look at it yesterday evening and the one of the first things I noticed is that neither of the ambient sill lights are working.

I'm pretty sure they should work as the sill plates appear identical to that of my Mk7.5 GTI, only that I would expect the light colour to be white on the GTD to match that of the door panels.

Seems strange that both are not working, so would anyone happen to know if there's a particular fuse that ensures the operation of these lights, or perhaps someone has experienced a similar issue and knows of a fix?

Thanks!

They are adjustable for brightness in the menu's but  don't know if the door sills can be adjusted separately.

Its not a non-UK sourced one is it? Does it have bi-xenon headlights?

If it's UK supplied (i.e. official VW UK channels) then yes, it should have sill ambient lights. Both my 2013 and 2016 GTD's did.

Yes, definitely UK supplied with Bi-Xenon headlights.

I've had another look this afternoon. Opened the passenger door and that side was working!
Closed the door, locked the car, unlocked the car, opened the passenger door again and then it wasn't working....

The wiring that connects to the light unit under the plastic sill trim is a small white ribbon cable (much like you get inside computers etc). It's very fragile and if the sill trim has been off at some time it's possible that the ribbon connector has either been damaged or has disconnected itself from the sill light unit.

I witnessed the drivers side door LED flickering on and off today, so clearly an iffy connection somewhere. I'll see if I can prise or remove the trim away from the cill and give the ribbon contacts a clean.

Considering both are doing it though, I reckon the issue might be further 'upstream'. If anyone happens to know where the wiring to these ends up it would be most helpful!

They wire back to the door control modules situated inside each front door, and via the main connector that runs from the body to the door leading edge.

Hello. First post on here  I've just bought a MK7 GTi the other week and the passenger side ambient light on the floor/cill isn't working but all the others are. Do you have any tips on how to get access to the ribbon cable? I have no idea how that panel on the floor comes off. Just don't want to break anything
