Mk7.5 GTI manual tuning options
« on: 16 September 2019, 22:51 »
Hi all,

I am very new here (joined today) I imagine this question has been asked 1000’s if times but despite my searching for a couple of hours I’m yet to find the answer...

As the topic suggests I am looking for the best either remap company or alternative box that would be suitable for my GTI which I am picking up the end of this month.

I have looked at REVO and have seen a few times people mentioning DTUK I would just like some help and or clarification. I see that also forge motorsport offer a remap does anyone have any experience with this map first hand? It seems significantly cheaper than others but offers same output performance.

Thanks

Tj

Good morning and welcome. I'm sure you're looking forward to getting your new car

Either of the three options which you mentioned will give you good results. I personally went for the DTUK box as my car was in warranty and I wanted something that (hopefully) wouldn't produce a TD1 flag. I've only had one issue with the box which turned out to be the wiring loom and DTUK sorted it quickly.

Having said this, were I to be getting the car mapped/tuning box now, I would probably go for Revo, and may do so at some stage in the future. I've had a revo map before on a previous car and it was indeed very good. As for forge, there hardware is of a very high quality so I imagine their maps would be fairly good too, although they have only started offering this service, so I haven't read any reviews.

Mountune have also branched out into VW tuning and provide their maps via a handset which you can then install yourself. I would say they too are of a high quality, but they seem more expensive than the others.

Whichever you go for I'm sure you won't be disappointed

I know this is probably not the answer you want to hear, but...

Unless you upgrade the clutch, don't tune a manual car. Some tuners will produce a "low torque" map, which will help, but the clutches are barely able to cope with the torque of a standard car, let alone a tuned one.

I know a lot of it will be down to driving style, but I've had my box and other mods for over two years and about 20k with no clutch issues.

I think the inevitable TD1 flag will be the least of your worries if you pop in the dealer for some warranty work!!

Welcome T12myj, a nice choice of car, is it brand new? We are assuming so being as you’re not collecting until later in the month.

If you’re unfamiliar with the TD1 then have a read of this https://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/8351-bulletin-posted-to-audi-dealers-this-morning/ but if you already know about it then you know the risks.

As said, the clutch is the weak point of the car. Some have had issue even as standard, most have had issues when mapped but one or two have had no issues even when mapped.
I had a stage 1 2013 GTI PP and stage 1 R both manual and didn’t get clutch slip but then again I didn’t do masses of miles on either car, they were more weekend use with the occasional commute.

Personally I would and did go the tuning box route with DTUK on one car and BMS JB1 on the other. Just remember to erase the ECU stored values before dealer visits just in case via VCDS/OBDeleven or battery disconnect.

OEM+ Racingline maps seem to be gaining in popularity but the established ones from REVO & APR are very tried and tested. They’re also all quite expensive! Still, if you’ve gotta do these things you’ve gotta pay for it! Mountune are new on the scene but well respected in Ford circles.
There are plenty of choices, none of the ones you mentioned would disappoint.

Thanks everyone for your help.

To confirm, it is not a new car...

2017 plate, 21k on the clock... 1 owner which was a member of VW management (not that it’s relevant)

Could someone provide more information on the DTUK box or link me to a forum that has this? Such as installation etc?

As for the REVO/FORGE map, on one of my previous cars I had a stage 1 this was on a 1.9TDI engine but I had no clutch slip and the map was ran on the vehicle for around 40/50k.

Even better, you’ve not got the WLTP GPF to worry about and the warranty will be shorter plus any early days niggles with the car will have been long since sorted.

https://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/ is DTUK

Have a search for pedalbox on here. This will give a massive improvement to the car even before the DTUK tuning box goes on.
DTUK do a forum discount, enter GTD80 or just ring them and they’ll do it over the phone.

There’s a how to on here for the pedalbox (takes 10 mins max)  and the tuning box is very simple to fit also.

The earlier TDI engines had a lot more headroom for extra power where as the GTI and R manual clutches give issues at standard power.
There are less threads on here but if you go over to VWROC.com/forums and search for clutch slip you’ll have hours and hours of happy reading! Yes it’s the R forum but both engines have similar torque and seem to share the clutch parts.
