non-standard service timing advice
« on: 23 August 2019, 08:43 »
Hi, I've just bought an Oct 16 GTi with 13k miles from a main VW dealer, so it's had its 140 point inspection etc and a full 12m warranty.  It has a receipt for an oil service at about 10,000 miles.

The service display now says an inspection service is due in 10,000 miles and a full oil change service in 12,000.

I know the inspection service is literally that - checking things and topping up fluids. I don't plan to pay for an inspection and an oil service near to each other. I do about 18,000 miles a year.

Questions:

a) How can I tell if the car is on fixed interval servicing (ie fixed to be every 10k miles) or the variable service (with oil being changed at 17-20k miles depending on driving pattern) ?

b) I will have the oil change service next - I guess that can be in 12,000 miles? Or will it affect the dealer warranty if I miss the inspection service in 10,000 miles? Ie I could have the oil service in 10,000 instead of 12,000 to maintain the warranty.

c) as a high mileage driver, would you switch to the variable length servicing which will mean a service about every 20k, or stay with fixed interval with an inspection at 10K and an oil at the next 10K?

many thanks for any thoughts.

My view is that the inspection service is the major 2 year service which should include things like air filter/ pollen filter (although VW reckons it doesnt need air filter changing till 6 years, 60k miles)  Brake fluid change after 3 years, then every 2 years.

I also think that the warranty will require 10k fixed oil changes to maintain - my extended warranty certainly does.

So I think you should change the oil at 20k miles or 12 months after the last oil change.

I'm totally confused as my intervals are really out of line with the standard (ie at 20k) but the car is saying an inspection at 22K and an oil service at 25k.  I'll take it in i think - I might go for the £20 summer checkup while at it.  Many thanks.
