Hi people, im new here, and Just saw the Royal Purple link on the home page. I have owned a 1987 Golf Gti (8v, 1800cc)for a numberber of years, and I was recommended royal purple some time ago. Their was some tappet noise, and I was advisd by a learned guy that RP would quieten it down. I changed, and it did. Good enough for me, im no chemist, but I have been using it ever since, and now using it in gearbox as well, and it has improved the change. Im lucky in that I live local to the guy that supplies it, or I may never have found it. Just thought I would post a bit of background info, as thought alot of people wouldn't have heard of it.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the feedback. I added the Royal Purple link just yesterday after the company contacted me. To be fair, I had never heard of them but it seems they have a good reputation with regard to track day use.

Take it I am the only one in here using it then.....what is everyone else in here using, out of interest?

And what do you guys judge your oil on? (and PLEASE don't say price, after all the money you spend on engines, alloys and other mods!!!!)

I use the 'Synta' range available from VW, GSF etc., usually the semi-synthetic silver one. I've been using it for around 10 years now without any problems.

I had a biker mate who used to use the oil from the chip pan in his winter run-around-car!!!

Did some comparisons.These figures are oficially published by each company, and they are fact, not heresay, which is what goes on in forums/carclubs alot of the time. RP has a higher flashpoint, and retains its viscosity better than Mobil 1. The number of times I have heard supposedley learned people say "Oh, I havnt heard of it, it cant be any good" really doesnt bear thinking about.Be interested in your opinions.


Royal Purple 5w30 motor oil

Flash point : 235 degrees celsius

Viscosity : cst @ 40 degrees celsius is 65.3

cst @ 100 degrees celsius is 11
(A mark of how well oil retains its viscosity working under temperature)

Mobil 1 5w30 with supersyn

Flash point : 224 degrees celsius

Viscosity : cst @ 40 degrees celsius is 56

cst @ 100 degrees celsius is 10
