the drivers side inner light has stopped/maybe never working.

Now i've check the bulb it's fine

I've taken off the grill (being a newbie it took me a while to realise that's how you got at the other one) and moved it along to the other side and when plugged in it doesn't light up although it does on the otherside.

So it must be the wiring, the covering of the wires had been melted at some point but upon cutting it open both wires inside are in tact brown white. Any ideas what that "thing is" that dangles down by the drivers side head light wiring its about 3inchs long and as thick as a packet of fruit pastels

any ideas it's not my earths it's not the bulbs the other side work as do the rest of the lights although the blue indicator on the dash dosen''t light up when full beam is on

I don't know where else to look

Aren't those clips that hold the connectors together bastids to get on. (NEWBIE)

Thanks for all your advice on the engine ideas i'll keep you posted and i'll get them pics up asap

also the oil light is flashing on the dash board and doesn't stop until i've turned the car on. Runs fine and all the levels are bang on. Hasn't lost any oil or water since i've had it only done about 500 miles tho

Checked the fuse?
Both lights at the front have different circuits. Have a look at the fusebox cover plate, tells you which one you need to look for.
Also the oil light flashes on all mk2 golfs when the ignition is in position 1, there to let you know the oil light works!
If it comes on when driving, then you gotta problem!

The oil light always flashes when there is low oil pressure, when the engine is off you tend to get a drop in oil pressure levels ;)

As for the spots, it sounds like the wire is toast, I may have a spare in my bag o' bits, I assume you've tried the bulb from the broken spotlight in the one that works?

That 'thing' is the dim dip resistor it makes your dim dip come on dimly when you switch on the sides, and is almost always broken ;)  If you follow the wiring up you'll see it plugs into a 2 pin plug near/under the airbox, I just unplugged it and ripped off the wires.
