Some of you might have noticed my scathing comments about hybrids and how they are just emission test avoiders and not actually effective in environmental protection....

Well, it seems so have the government:

Why does it chuck a spanner in the works?  If you took the Golf GTE, with its "28 mile" range, its using 2014 lithium battery technology, and you put todays cutting edge battery technology into it you would get almost "50 miles" never mind waiting a few more years.  I think a lot of people don't realise how quickly things are going to change over the next 20 years.  Take a Tesla Model 3 and apply 10-20 years of technology improvements and cost reductions, no one other than real enthusiasts are going to be buying combustion cars anymore.

I like that graph, whilst you could argue about the dates, the curve is probably accurate(ish).

My point with it is that hybrid is a false messiah and that encouraging people to invest in hybrid is wrong. If everyone replaced every vehicle with a current hybrid today, it wouldn't reduce pollution to anything like the levels actually mandated. You need pure EV to achieve it

The other thing on that graph is the end of government incentives to buy electric vehicles.... that will come too. Along with taxation in some form to replace the VED take from ICE vehicles. Any "electric is cheaper" will last only as long as the government encourages people to make the change, after that its business as usual for the tax man.

The tax man is always going to win, whichever way you look at it. They will work out a way to tax vehicle owners...whichever power source you use. Those snouts in the trough have to be fed...and it is you and me who must pay the bill.
