Help save my Mk1 - ECO mods ?
« on: 05 October 2005, 22:59 »

Hi all, first post etc

Right here goes !!

I bought my Mk 1 Golf C 1.1 a couple of months ago. Its in good condition and most importantly almost totally rust free with only 82k
pics -

The idea was for the Mrs and I to use it for work between us to save mileage on our other cars (Renault 5 Turbo and Mitsi FTO). I was gonna lower it and put some Porsche Cookie cutters I've got on it to make it look  until I've finished playing with my R5 sold it on and then turn my attention to the golf - 2.0 16v etc

Now for the problem - Its not as cheap to run as we had hoped, had a Fiat Cinqucento 900cc 5spd that used to sip fuel compared to this !!!

If I dont make it cheaper she wants us to sell it and get a Corsa Diesel !!!!!! I've got nowhere to store it and its too good to let go !!! Passed Mot today (only needed a new number plate !!)

sooooooo - what I can I do to make it more economical ? Was there any models (polo?) with a 1.1i engine that I can swap the iinjection parts across onto mine. What about a lower ratio gearbox thats not revving like hell at 65-70 ? 5spd ?

Also read about the Formel E - high compression engine and longer gearbox - would this engine be ok with 95ron as I read it was designed for 4* ? Is the carb any different.

Any help would be really appreciated as I love this car already and would hate to have to let it go because I would struggle to find one as sound for soo little money in the future !!!!!

hi ya,

welcome to the site

Nice motor you got there

Don't see the point in changing the engine, its only a 1.1. That has to be cheap compaired to a Mk1 gti and your R5 and mitsi. you would except it to use more juice than a fiat Cinqucento 900cc. Surly its only a matter of a few quid. Sell the R5

Not much help  but don't get rid of her

cheers
Tucker

Hi, cheers for the reply

I am gonna sell the 5     -----     but not yet

Idea is to use this for a year while I finish off my 5 then sell that and spend the cash on the Golf !!!

Pics of my 5 btw      -----       www.rtoc.org/library/default.asp?id=2043

I'm hoping that the mrs will like the car the more she uses it !!!! How can she not !!!!  I've got till after xmas

Anyone else with any ideas ??

You can fit a MK3 Polo GT and G40 engines with little problem. I know someone a G40 engine/box/loom if you're interested.

I've got some Porsche Design 90s too.
