Returning to vw- want a mk7 GTI
« on: 04 March 2018, 15:25 »
Hi all,

Every 3 years I flog off some company shares and change my car.

It’s that time and I’ve litteeally spent 2 years being miserable with my bmw130 and have decided to get a gti mk7- I’ve owned a mk1 gti and a corrado g60 back in the days and am excited to return.

Few questions.

How other than red Gti callipers do I distinguish a performance mode to a normal one ?

Will be buying second hand market probably 13/14 plate - what options are worth trying to get a car with ?

Want cruise control and sat nav but these are standard right ?

Any pointers or common issues to look out for ?

Thanks in advance

Hi mozzaita!

I've a PP manual and love it! The easiest way to spot a PP is having GTI on the front calipers (non-PP also have red calipers), rear vented discs and red GTI badges front and back (although some early models were plain silver). Not all early cars will have nav, that came in 2015. Nav cars have the roof antenna and a NAV button top right of the screen in the dash, cars without nav will have the same button labelled SETUP. Afaik acc has always been standard. Options are rather personal but if you are too specific you'll just make finding the right car near impossible. They are very well specced as standard so if I were you have a couple of preferred colours, which ever gearbox suits you and number of doors and search those. 19 inch wheels can be easily buckled on potholes, early turbos could wear, coolant leaks, stonechips and slipping clutches. No doubt there are other things too but just look over a car thoroughly, check history etc and you should be okay but clearly any car can surprise including new!

What spec do you fancy?

Worth having a read over on the MK7 section - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=117.0 - plenty of help there.

^^^ What Watts said  :nerd:

Buy as late a model as you can afford as they had the best spec and more chance of still having some factory warranty.
Don’t get overly hung up on spec, unless there’s something you can’t live without, being flexible on spec will allow you a much broader choice of cars.
They’re well specced as standard, ride well, have front and rear sensors, folding mirrors, dual zone climate, xenons, self dipping rear view mirror, rain sensor and a few other things that generally tend to be options on other German cars plus the radar cruise control you desire.
The only cars not to have the latter were the very first batch of dealer demo cars and VW press fleet GTI’s on a 13 plate.

As Jeremy Clarkson points out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VwgvIqXg3A it is not possible to fit a nuclear warhead in a bmw 130
