MOT from May 2018
« on: 01 March 2018, 12:21 »
I assume most have seen this, but things to note:

1) Retro fitting HID bulbs is a fail - OEM is OK, but none of the super bright Halfords crap.

2) If you have a DPF, there must be no smoke. Hope you aren't doing a regen at MOT test time...

The thing is, they're so behind the times. We've now got high power LED bulbs people are fitting. Hopefully it's worded so that anything other than the standard lighting type (IE Halogen) is a fail. I like the fact it is, the beam pattern from HIDs is so bad, I'm sick of being blinded by them.

Some vehicles may be fitted with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps. It is not permitted to
convert existing halogen headlamp units for use with HID bulbs. If it is clear that such a conversion has
been carried out, rather than replacing the entire unit with one designed and approved for use with HID
bulbs, the headlamp should be rejected.
A ‘light source’ means any bulb, LED or other means of emitting light.
Repairs to lamps must be assessed considering security, colour, light output and durability.
4.1.5 Levelling devices
Where a manual headlamp levelling device (driver control) is fitted it must work. Before operating the
control, check the setting it is on and return it to the same place.
Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be
fitted with a suspension or headlamp self-levelling system. Where such systems are fitted, they must
work; however, it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of selflevelling systems. In such cases, the benefit of the doubt must be given.
HID lamps may have ‘DCR’ marked on the headlamp lens, otherwise they can be identified by:
 taking a few seconds to reach full intensity
 having a bluish tinge to the light
 having an igniter module/inverter behind the headlamp

I read on the Honest John site that the new part of the smoke test only applies to up to Euro 5 cars.
