Help with wheel dimensions
« on: 01 April 2019, 16:25 »
I'm looking at getting some new wheels for my GTI, and am looking for some help with dimensions from peoples personal experience. Basically I want a wheel that will fit snug in the arches without the use of spacers. At the moment my car is on the racing line suspension kit, standard wheels with 12mm spacers, so I'm after a wheel width and offset that fits perfectly. I'm open to both 18" or 19" options. If people could put what they went for in here that would be great, pictures even better, plus tyre sizes. Thanks

Try the wheel fitment calculator, at the bottom you will see adverts for wheels that can be ordered to suit your car, et, width and diameter, you can even order the wheels with a different et for front and rear.

I'm running 19" BBS SR wheels which are 19x8.5 ET46 and they are fitted with 235/35 R19 Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric tyres.

I'm lowered using Eibach Sportline springs and the fronts sit perfectly flush with the rears very very slightly further in. If you wanted perfectly flush at the rear, you could add 5mm spacers but I'm of the opinion it doesn't need it.

The only thing that you might need to do is the "Fender screw mod" on the front as i had the slightest of rubbing up front and this cured it - alternatively, dropping to 225 width tyres might stop it rubbing, however this could make them look quite stretched on an 8.5" rim. Other tyres might have a slightly different profile and not rub even at 235 width. I have no problems with rubbing at full lock on the inner arches, but it's close.

Basically, anything (18 or 19) 8.5" wide with an ET of 45(ish) mm should work, just be careful of the rubbing on the front under suspension compression.

Thanks, have you got any pictures?

If going 8” wide rather than 8.5 I can vouch for ET41 being a great compromise.
You could get away with ET35 on the back but I’d not go lower than 40 on the front personally.

Good call and this might allow the use of 225/35R 19 tyres (which the GTIs came with on the 19" wheels)

I'll dig some photos out at home - any excuse to post pictures of my car lol.
