Tyre insurance

Had my new car for 3 weeks and this morning hit something on the road and the tyre blew out. I was hoping it was just going to be a puncture repair but the inner side wall had a tear and could not be fixed. My car has 19" inch tyres and I was wondering if its worth taking out tyre insurance.

Has anyone taken out this insurance and is it worth it?

I had tyre and wheel cover with a Ford Fiesta a couple of years back. I got it as the kids were named drivers on the car so figured the wheels would get a good scuffing and as the car was on a PCP thought it would help come chop in time as I could get them refurbed for "free" under the policy.

As it turned out, the wheels remained perfect but the needed x3 tyres in a 2 year period. It was great as they were covered - but beware the devil in the detail - on my policy Ford preferred to replace the tyres or it was a long winded claim process if using an alternative agent which was a pain in the butt - bigger pain when the car had no spare wheel either!!

So - it may be worth it - cost wise I definitely saved a few quid, but make sure you are aware of what you are signing up to.

The only insurance worth taking out is the insurance you didn't take out.

FWIW, I've never had tyre insurance and have only had two tyres in nearly 20 years of driving that couldn't be repaired (and one was because it was a runflat) probably setting me back £200 in total, so £10 a year.

It's a gamble like any insurance. I've no idea what it costs but why not put the premium aside rather than gamble it should you need a new tyre? As eatontrifles says, how often have you had an unrepairable tyre? I can only think of 1 in 15+ years.

I took out alloy and tyre insurance with premia solutions for my golf gti, I new it was only  matter of time before myself or wife  kerbed the Santiagos, sure enough 10 month later I badly kerbed the nearside front and damaged the tyre sidewall, claimed on the policy wheel repaired, and tyre replaced absolutely no problem.
Then just recently my wife kerbed both nearside alloys, the car is now at jct600 Rotherham for service and alloy wheel repair, for me the insurance has more than paid for itself.
However had the car not come with the diamond cut alloys I might of thought twice about the insurance

Wolfie67, just be aware that not all wheel and tyre insurances cover diamond cut alloy wheels, so if your 19" wheels are diamond cut, then it'd be best to check the wheel/tyre insurance your considering does cover these before you buy!

Yeah I did make sure the policy covered diamond cut polished wheels.

Purely a money maker for the salesman. Not needed insurance in over 35 years of driving. Had one blow-out on a tyre that was due for replacement anyway. Better of putting the mony into your own bank than the insurers IMO.
