Electric Handbrake

Surely most cars will have electric handbrakes eventually.

Yes, but probably for manufacturing cost savings, not necessarily consumer convenience, although in this case it absolutely is so damned good.

You can release the handbrake without putting on the seat belt if you press the footbrake at the same time. Just remember to put it back on again when you have reversed the car out of the garage

That's in the older Golfs. it changed in the newer ones that you can drive without your seatbelt on and the handbrake will still release. It also puts the handbrake back on automatically.


My GTD had the older system and it was funny to see my kids try and move the car in the morning without their belt on. Well actually it wasn't as my son managed to move the car about 10 feet putting a big trench in the stones as the rear wheels dragged.
But they always forgot to put the car handbrake back on as it doesn't automatically come back on in the older Golfs when you release it manually.

I have a DSG box and I switch the handbrake off and leave the car in Park when it's in the garage. This stops the pads sticking to the discs which would be a problem if you want to push the car out. If you have a manual box you could do the same and leave the car in gear to achieve the same result.

How do you manage to achieve that, as even when you open the door the handbrake comes on?

Push Autohold off, then put the lever into park.

I put Autohold off, when driving into my garage, to make small movements easier by using the footbrake against the engine. Had my pads stick after putting the car in the garage, with the ebrake on, after washing it. Very scary trying to overcome the sticking brakes in a DSG car, while maneouvering out of tight garage doors!
