Noise from brake pedal
« on: 21 March 2016, 09:20 »
Hi guys, I'm 3 months into my ownership of a 63 reg GTI which I'm loving to bits but at the weekend when the wife was driving I noticed a noise every time she took her foot off the brake pedal it's hard to describe but it's like a clunk noise now every time I drive it does my head in but I'm not sure if it was there before or not, does anyone else have this? if i take my foot off the brake pedal slowly there's no noise.

There should be a rubber stop that the pedal hits when you take your foot off the brake. Maybe this has come away in some way.

Feel your pain!  Mine has started doing exactly the same after 18 months and 21k miles and like you said it its very noisy unless I deliberately remove my foot slowly.

Will check out the rubber stop mentioned above before thinking about raising it with the stealer.
Ordered Jun 18: R 5dr, IG, DSG, Prets, DLA, climate w/s and tints.
Aug 14 - Jul 18: GTD 5dr, CSG, DSG, S&S pack, Vienna leather and Santiago's.

Let me know if you have any luck, had a look yesterday and couldn't see anything obvious!!

I've not had much of a chance to check the noise out in more detail due to work and weather. But one thing I did try today was to drive without auto hold active for 10 mins or so.  Surprisingly when I switched it back on the pedal was a lot quieter............

I had the same happen to my car.

Took it to VW, the Techie sat in the drivers seat and kept pressing the pedal hard to the floor over and over again, funnily enough the 'clunk' stopped after that.

Yeah tried this myself, when turned off there was definately an improvement as it seemed the brake pedal didn't travel as much when pressing which helped with the noise but as soon as auto hold was turned back on the clunk returned.

Interesting, I'll give this a try.

Finally resolved, went in for a service and asked them to check the noise and they came back saying it needed a new brake servo and it would take 2 days to fit, had the car back a couple of days and it's so much better now.
