Revo DSG stage 1 remap - My thoughts
« on: 11 August 2016, 11:26 »
Hi all

So I thought I would just post up my thoughts of the recent Revo stage 1 DSG remap my 2010 Mk6 Gti has had –

99% of the time my DSG box had been faultless, travelling to and from work I would forget it was there due to its seamless changes and ideal gear selection. However the 1% it played up, it would ruin my fun by interrupting that nice driving ‘rhythm’, that ‘zone’ you sometimes find yourself in and it bothered me. Let me try and explain.

Understandably VW has built the DSG box and software based on the lowest common denominator -  the type of person who loves nothing more than to drive exclusively in 2nd gear at 18,000rpm. It wants to protect its reputation and the reliability of its assets . . .  so it overrides the ‘manual’ mode meaning that whilst the car may hold the redline, it WILL change gear when it sees fit. This auto change up of gear has caught me out a few times on long sweeping bends (upsetting the car balance) and felt like a bit of an annoying intrusion.

Secondly (and not due to VW’s fault) the automatic kick down was becoming a PITA. With the Gti at engine Stage 2, the power is often there for an overtake without gear change. But as the DSG software wasn’t calibrated to the increase in engine hp, the Gti would more often than not kick down and take off like a rocket when I really didn’t need it. The amount of looks I got from people as I blasted past was in truth pretty embarrassing. I’m nearly 40 not 18 years of age, my boy racer days are well and truly behind me.

The Revo DSG tune fixes both these things, now when in ‘manual’, the system really is manual. It holds gears into the red line, it allows you to overtake sans kick down and therefore use the surge of boost (which I love in 3rd gear). . . It’s great.
This is why I had it installed and it certainly fixes the issues. There are other advertised features too such as increase in torque limit control to 500nm, shift point optimization and increase to 7000rpm auto shift.

It’s here however that I am less impressed, I can honestly say I feel none of the additional features has made a difference, the torque curve seems to have run out of puff by about 6500rpm so I don’t want to run to 7000rpm before changing up, the shift optimization . . . . . maybe a little, but I am far from convinced.

At the end of the day it’s probably going to boil down to cost . . . . £300 . If you want to get rid of the car changing gear for you as I did, it’s totally worth it and I can recommend it as part of the package with engine and brake upgrades. To make the purchase solely on the other options though. Hmmm I’m not convinced and £300 seems a little steep based on my evidence.

Its all here if anyone is interested -

Thanks for sharing. And nice write up!

I did wonder if there was a way to make the manual mode more..manual!
