timing chain noise on start up 1.4tsi 122
« on: 04 April 2016, 13:31 »
Hi,

I'm selling my A3 as I have the scirocco now. Yesterday I started the a3 to move it, (it has a 1.4tsi 122) I heard the dreaded chain rattle. it's happened before but the chain rattle on start up was very loud, then settled down... I was under the impression the single turbo units dont have issues,

It's done 85k now, sounded exactly the same as this

should I be worried, I mean I'm selling the car, but I dont want to sell a broken car, especially since I have warrenty on it.

Sounds very much like the chain has stretched and 85k is probably about the time it could start to be a problem. If you are selling through a garage let them sort it but if privately then it would be worth getting it checked out if the warranty covers it. I believe there is a tool now available to test if the chain is within tolerance without dismantling. Replacing chain. tensioner, chain guides and gears can cost up to a grand!! What Scirocco have you bought? I have a 160 TSI as well as the mk 6 GTI.

ive read it could just be the tensioner taking a little longer to pressurise, might use some 5w-40, this apparently gives better oil pressure, so could be worth a shot, got a 2.0tdi 140 scirocco but that now has a weird engine/gearbox rattle on takeoff/idle -_- so not impressed but that's another thread altogether...

Could be the oil pressure. Hope that is all it is and the 5w40 works (that is what VW dealers use for annual service intervals - long life is 5w30). Tension when not running is by spring pressure in the chain tensioner and that can weaken. I change oil every 5k miles to try to keep oilways etc clean. Sorry to hear about the scirocco. Hope you get it sorted.

Never wait for the tensioner to break - as most warranty providers will tell you they only cover until broken - the Consequences of waiting for this are EXPENSIVE ! - get it sorted mate - if you need any advice just poke :)
