this will just be an ecu tweak gents, like the cupra 290, both will remap stage1 to the same figures so no one is losing out by this change even if VW dont bring it to the R, it does herald the way for a FL on the golf though, so i wouldnt be ordering right now.
From comments on Cupranet I don't think it was even a map change was it? More of a badge change as they seem to reckon it's running the same tune as an R.
For those not interested in going stage 1 I think the slight hump in torque may make a difference to drivability. Again, assuming it's even a different map(?), mind you the R power graphs I've seen generally read on the lower side unlike GTI graphs which seem to reflect the car makes more power than 220/230PS.
