Mk1 Gti 1.8 Kjet DX Fuel Pump Questions
« on: 17 March 2016, 04:27 »
Hi Guys,

I actually own a VW T25 Campervan which has a 1.8 DX Kjet engine installed in it.

The fuel tank is for the T25 1.9 Injection so the outlets are bid enough how ever it does not have a lift pump etc. It currently has an inline genuine VW fuel pump connected to the Accumulator and then onto the engine.

Now I am looking to make the fuel pump quieter as it is very load when running. It is held on by an after market bracket with no rubber mounts in between the bracket and the chassis so I think that doesn't help. The pump is also not in the VW foam sleeve I see many VW pumps seem to be in.

Can anyone help me with a path forward here. My thinking is:

1) If the pump old (being original) and need of replacement?
2) If I replaced can I use any pump that has same or higher flow rate?
3) Do I need to try and fabricate a pickup pump from the fuel tank? (not a nice thought to try and do)
4) Will simply adding rubber between the bracket and body and fitting a VW foam pump sleeve silence it?
5) Do I replace the pump with the Mk2 style pump which seems to be in a plastic fuel reservoir?

I should note that the pump is often rather hot so I am not sure if this is due to age or fuel starvation. IF the latter not sure how I can fix this.

Is the pump on a Mk1 Gti simply inline without a pickup pump?

Cheers

Can anyone at least tell me if the original setup worked without a pickup pump?

Im sure they have a lift pump in tank.
But if its running then your setup works.
When you say the pump is loud, is it making a whirring noise, thats normally a telltail sign pump on the way out if its a loud whirring noise.

Also on it getting hot, that seems imo that the pumps working hard to get the fuel. Have you thought about putting a electric pump like a facet near the tank to get the fuel to the k-jet pump?
