I found with the GTI people were generally quite friendly towards it and always had nice things to say about it. It drew a lot of compliments.
The R seems to be completely invisible to 90% of the population and the only questions I get asked tend to be along the lines of "is it a Diesel?" The odd person I can be bothered to explain to that it's a 300 bhp (give or take) 4WD car tend to be really surprised and completely unaware that VW even make such a thing. The other 10% tends to be split between those that have a quiet acknowledgement to what it is and a knowing nod, and those that see four tail pipes and immediately decide to do something stupid or reckless.
