Surface contamination
« on: 12 June 2015, 20:53 »
To any cleaning experts on here....

This is on our other car..not the Golf...
2 month old car.....paint was perfectly smooth and sealed well.
A couple of days ago I went to wash it and noticed the paint surface was terrible......cause unknown.
Had a chance to take a closer look today.....so ending up claying the bonnet in an attempt to restore the paint surface. The clay was certainly removing the contamination and the surface was feeling very good....thought that had sorted it. But after moving onto the roof with the clay and then returning to the bonet it felt rough again...???? Ive never come across this before and im a little confused.

Any suggestions how a paint surface can "feel" fine one minute....then 15 mnutes later feel rough again id be grateful for any advise or suggestions. This is being done in a garage so nothing is falling onto the car in between.

Thanks
Ken

Pollen?

Even parked up in garage, when you are out and about it will get on the car.

My car is entirely covered in pollen at though moment, roof to tyre.  There is a lot of it about.

OP - I'd wash it and immediately after (before pollen has had time to settle) and do the plastic bag test - put a thin plastic bag (sandwich) bag over your hand and run it over the paintwork.  This emphasises any surface contaminants.  If it still feels rough it would suggest the clay hasn't removed all the contaminants.  I'd give it a going over with iron remover, e.g, IronX and a tar remover, such as Tardis, to be sure you have eliminated all surface contaminants.

Is the roughness all over the bonnet or just in places?  Has anything etched the paint, i.e bird poo?  This type of damage would feel rough and would be into the clearcoat.

I've been cleaning my car almost every other day this week, the pollen sets like glue and is an absolute pain to remove.

Don't park under any trees.....

I agree, it's awful stuff, instantly clings to the surface.  Got to tackle mine this weekend.  I never ever park under trees but that's mainly to avoid bird crap.

If there is a lot of pollen about when you are cleaning the interior of car, make sure you don't leave the car doors open for any length of time as it gets everywhere inside too.  PITA and not great if you suffer from hayfever either.

Thanx for the feedback guys...I'll persist with it.
At least our GTI has been covered up over the last week...it's paintwork should have survived better.
