Revo, superchips and the like
« on: 18 September 2005, 23:18 »
Am I right in thinking that a REVO map is only good when your car is running exactly standard?

ie, standard air box with panel filter and exhaust else the REVO map won't be right. If it's off the shelf and simply installed through the diag port without rolling road time then surely it's not actually bespoke to your car and a map that takes several hours and actually takes into account your large cone free flowing air filter aswell as larger exhaust, decat pipe and all the other little bits and bobs you do. And there's the larger intercooler, free flowing custom boost pipes, lack of air con pump drawing on engines output.

For most people this is ok, but surely for a proper remap done on the RR is a lot better than the off the shelf REVO or superchips one?

Mine's been on the map that I was given when I had the engine conversion over a year ago and 95% of the time it runs sweet as a nut seeing as I've changed most of the setup since the conversion. I'm about to have a larger free flowing 2.5" bore exhaust fitted tomorrow which will hopefully reduce my boost and lag aswell as increase the output slightly. Then it's off to Jabba for the all important remap which should push the output up to the 230bhp area.

What are other people's thoughts on the off the shelf remaps on not so standard cars?

certain "custom" maps arent as custom as you might think, only sure fire way is to get a standalone ecu and map to your own needs. with regards to revo though, they have software for different stages, depending on your mods. try and grab me on msn mate and ill go through some things with you.

I think your logic is 'TRUE' dizzie. How can a map be right for a car thats not standard without each variable tuned while the car is being put through its pace's on a rolling road?
Used to have a '97 MK3 16v GTI 3dr in 'Black Magic'... now have a '55 Civic Type-S...

I understand REVO do have their 'stages' (which sounds very chavy to me) but they only work if you have a miltek exhaust with a sports decat or whatever they incorporate.

I suppose you could put my car on the rolling road and give it a few hours of fiddling get it somewhere close. but then another 2 days of RR time and more fiddling might return a better result than a mornings RR time.

The REVO maps will be for a standard car. A custom map will always be better, epecially where the engine etc. deviates from factory spec.

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

For the sort of money some of these places charge for an OBD2 remap I think its a bit naughty, most of them don't actually have rolling roads if you did want proof of the "estimated" power output your out of luck. Your going on the talk rather then actual proven fiqures of your car and set up.

I would go to a proper tuning company at the start and have the "chipping/mapping" carried out, with a before and after run performed so you know where your £400 odd quid is going. Rather then get it done, then have to fork out again to have a rolling road to put your mind at rest and to tweak it up.
