Colour coding
« on: 04 May 2015, 17:55 »
thought i might do some colour coding of some of the black plastic bumpers.

i'm going to do the rear bumper like this

just getting some prices together for that to be done professionally but i'm thinking about doing the front splitter and side skirts myself... any tips for this? how to remove the splitter and side skirts and also any tips for preping the plastic?

I paid around £250 for a VW body shop to spray up an R32 bumper, as a rough price to beat. I would imagine a local paint shop will be less.

As for removing the splitter, it's just a case of removing all the torx screws that hold it to the front bumper, there are quite a few but it's similar to removing the engine under tray.

For the side skirts and splitter being painted, I think a lot of people use very fine sand paper and "flatten" the textured plastic then use an extra layer or two of primer and paint to really make them smooth. You could source some used R32/E30 side skirts and re-paint them, it's slightly less work but a bit more expensive. Also keep your eye out for an ED30 splitter, much better look to the front end and again, a lot less time to prep and paint.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

had a look at removing the front splitter yesterday. it's in 2 parts and the middle part comes off really easily, just a few torx screws and 3 cross heads that are hidden but that came off easily.

the trouble i have now is with the part of the splitter that's attached to the bumper. i've taken off all the torx screws along the bottom plus the 2 that are in each wheel arch (pretty sure i only needed to do 1 but both were easily accessible)

but it seems the splitter and bumper are pretty well attached together. is it just a case of pulling the splitter off of the bumper with clips or are there any other screws i've missed. not too keen on pulling it off and breaking it if it's not supposed to come off like that!
