Gearbox Problems again! Advice needed please
« on: 10 April 2015, 21:13 »
Hi Guy's & Gal's..

Where shall I start?
My golf is a MK3 Gti 8v agg 97' @ 106,000miles presently.

I rebuilt the OE gearbox roughly 6,000miles ago due to it becoming very rough and whiney in 3rd & 4th etc.
It was in good condition internally besides the shagged bearing's. So I bought a Bearing kit from eBay that included all bearing's except the diff pair. Rebuilded it and all was well till about 2yrs or there abouts and it just ended up whining in 3rd & 4th again.
It's presently on my work bench, soon to be taking it apart again!

I have a temporary gearbox in my car whilst i sort this one out. Because the one i've put in whines in almost all gear's.

So I'm thinking the ebay bearing's didn't last long!

Your thought's would be much appreciated :) Rob

would that not be the meshing of the gears if its only in third and fourth? if it was the bearings it would be doing it in every gear right?

You have a good point, but with how it all goes back together there isn't any room for gear mesh adjustment, well that I found.
It does whine in all gears but it's worst in 3rd & 4th. Plus before I took the box out, it felt very rough. Almost like it was dry on oil! But I measured the amount that went in, and what drained out, all 2.1 ltrs accounted for.

So I'm still puzzled :(

gears tend to wear out eventually like the bearings do. I went through 3 gearboxes in my old mk2 and they all had a noticeable whine in 3rd gear. bearable but noticeable. I think your best bet would be looking out for a very low mileage replacement box. oh and another thing is that some 020s came with a gasket between bellhousing and main casing and some didn't. if you fit a gasket where there wasn't one originally it will mess up the gear mesh clearances.
