Braking issues
« on: 28 March 2015, 20:48 »
Just acquired a V5 Golf which has been sat about for quite a few months. When I test drove it the brake pedal goes to the floor and you have to pump it to get even a small amount of braking. Engaging the clutch takes any brake pressure away.

This is exactly the same as when I f****d up my brakes on my mk5 by getting loads of air in the system, but is it normal for this to happen to a car that's been standing still or could there be a leak somewhere? Fluid levels seem fine so was going to flush and bleed the system and check all lines but is there anything else I should consider?

Could be seals in the master cylinder bud

Very unusual for just a few months.

Weird that the clutch takes away brake pressure, they share the same reservoir but are two different systems.

This might sound an odd question but what happens if you run it with the brake fluid cap off/loose.

I think Wes might be on the right path with this one. Have you bled it and checked for air?

Where all my moneys went.

I'm going to bleed the system next week, but I did find it odd that air has got into the system. I haven't tested it with the fluid cap off.

If it is MC seals, easy fix or bit of a pain? If its not a simple enough job the car may go to scrap or be broken for parts.

Could be moisture in the fluid if it's been sat a hwhile.

I've worked out it must of been sat for over a hear, last MOT expired in early 2014 so I think a full bleed and new fluid in the whole system. Is a good first test. If its seals in the MC, I take it the problem won't go away once I refresh the fluid, right?

Yeah it will be exactly the same as before if it's the seals

Sweet. I'll try the simple option first then. I have another problem regarding cooling, check out the topic in Dub Rides, its explained there if you get 5 minutes.

Very grateful for the help so far. Help me save this car from the scrap yard!
