Car choices do I keep or sell?
« on: 02 March 2015, 13:50 »
Hi all,

I need some advise please, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place so I will keep this simple.

I'm nearly 30 living with my brother but saving for my own place.
I have a long time partner which together we are saving to live our lives together.
I have another lady in my life, thats my mk2 golf 16v, it's my first car and had her for over 8 years now.
Owning a car for so long as you can imagine has massive sentimental value.
My mk2 owes me in excess of £15k over my ownership, its had 1 engine rebuild, 2 gearbox rebuilds, bigger brakes, coilovers, ARB's, polybushed, 9j borbets, complete repaint and lots more its crazy.
I have a lot of love for the car and need to inject some more cash for an interior retrim, engine conversion and another repaint.
I need the car to be reliable in terms of ditching the k-jet and having comfort from a nice new interior and looking good with the confidence of doing an occasional long distance drive.

The question is what would you lot do? Is it time for me to part with the car and get modern sensible GTI/R32 or would you continue down the road of the car being a bottomless pit.

My heart says keep her as I know I will regret it but my mind (and friends) say get something newer.
Feeling really torn as to the future of not only my car but my life as well.

I'm sure someone has felt like this, I could really use some constructive advise please.
Thanks

If you sell it, you won't get a life changing amount of money for it, so I'd mothball it until you are in a position to be able to carry on with the project. In the mean time, forget all about fancy cars and buy a Mk4 diesel simply as a tool to get you from one place to another.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

This.

Let's say you get 3k for the mk2. Is an extra three grand to spend on the new reliable car going to make much difference? Nope. Keep it, have it as a Sunday toy/project.
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.

The comment on moneypit...all cars are! They get driven and break...some sooner than others, and others you wish they did just so you can justify getting rid.  Mothball it as suggested...you will need the Sunday treats once you have your own house moneypit to contend with.

Hi all,

Thanks for the advise, I think I will hold onto it for now, if I sold it I would only end up getting something I don't know the history on.
I will keep driving it until something breaks that forces my hand.
I forgot to say, it's my only car and I cycle to work so it's not used much anyway. I will just keep saving for both a house and a little towards the car, this way I can finish it one day.

Thanks again for everything said.
