mk3 1.6 on a mk2

Has anybody done that? How difficult will it be? What will it require? As I know the mk3 1.4 bolts right in the mk2 chassis but I suppose that as the 1.6 mk2 motor has a lot of differencies comparing to a 1.3 mk2 so will and the 1.6 mk3.

I own a 1.3 Golf CL Mk2

I doubt it would be worth it unless the shell is absolutely mint, and possibly not even then.  You'd want to upgrade the brakes to cope with the extra power, as well as the Master Cylinder as I believe these are different to the 1.6 Driver upwards, as well as the wiring too.

If I were you I'd think about just buying a 1.6 driver, as these are very close to the GTI in terms of features and parts compatibility.  Plus you would end up with similar power output and it would probably be alot cheaper!

The 1.6 Mk3 gives 100hp and the 1.6 Mk2 gives 75hp!! I don't wanna pay a bunch of money for just 20 more horses...I would drop in a 1.6 Mk2 but I can't find one in decent condition. The brakes are a whole different story...don't mix them

I didn't mean drop a 1.6 driver engine in, I meant BUY a 1.6 Driver :)

If insurance isn't a problem why not just buy a GTI?

it would be cheaper in the long run! and less of a headache, 1.3's drivers and gtis and only alike in appearance only!

I believe that a motor from a mk3 will be much more reliable due to the fact that it's newer and I will also have a decent injection system in comparison to the one of the mk2s.

If you get a mk2 in decent nick mate there's not much else out there to beat it in reliability.

That's why most of them are still going strong on 100,000 to 200,000 miles!!!!
