Could be something daft like oil pipe to turbo 'exploding' (if it's a turbo?), or oil filter housing cracking open....
worst case would be that something in the engine gave and as bandit mentioned has come through the crankcase...
Difficult to give a remote diagnosis.... though since it just completely died it's more likely something more serious (e.g. cracked oil filter housing would not stop engine - not immediately anyway).
Did you take any photos?
no photos taken since i had the 2 little ones with me at the time and was in no mood for taking photos

btw about a month ago the car was left overnight with water all the way up to its grill badge as the rescue lines were unable to drive through the flooded area. the mechanic could not diagnose any faults at the time but said that any residues of water in the engine could cause faults in the next 2-3K miles, guess what its the next 2k miles... wonder it the 2 relate. anyways i'll b hearing from the garage on Monday hopefully i wont have to shell out a fortune for this
